Happy Anniversary LOVING HUT !!!

Shinjuku’s vegan restaurant Loving Hut celebrates this month june its first anniversary in a very special way; everyday they give the first twenty customers a free lunchbox set meal !! wowowowow !

Loving Hut is part of a fast growing chain of veggie restaurants with currently 10 restaurants in america, 22 restaurants in Taiwan, and more restaurants in China, Australia, Malaysia, Korea, Indonesia and there are plans for a Loving Hut branch in Thailand.

Herwin’s Opinion : Vegan Statistics.

Are you one of the 223 people that voted on the MINI POLL on this site ?

The results of this little POLL shows that the visitors of this vegan site are 30% foreign males, 30% foreign females, 30% japanese females and only 9 % japanese males.
This underrepresentation of the japanese male is also shown in a previous POLL on this site. That’s no news though, for anybody who visits veggie restaurants in Japan or veggie gatherings in Japan. Because many times the only guy in a veggie restaurant is a foreigner. Most japanese guys though, if they are veggie, they seem to be vegan and not vegetarian. Maybe because the japanese vegetarian image is very feminine and soft, and focused on vegetarian cooking and yoga, while the vegan image is more stronger and connected with animal rights.

News from the Vegan Restaurant Pocketguide.

Sales of the Pocketguide started in March and by now just three months later allready half of all Pocketguides have been sold.

SHOCKING : Not Vegan Anymore !!!!

Last year the Garden Cafe (Vegan Restaurant Pocketguide page 32) in Aoyama re-opened its doors with a completely Vegan Menu. Their green salad amazed me because it was so huge and fresh and delicious.
This week however i got an e-mail from a Pocketguide reader (Thank you !!) informing me that Garden Cafe has onion soup made with chicken broth on its menu ! (besides they have some egg ingredients in their lunchboxes.
An e-mail has been send to the Garden cafe to confirm if they really started to use animal ingredients in their food. No reply has been received yet.

Tokyo’s Ogikubo’s Vegan Hearts Peace Cafe now Vegan Healing Cafe !

I already did post it last month, but here again, because now it’s for sure : the Vegan Healing Cafe (the Shibuya shop is Japan’s most famous vegan cafe where regularly famous veggie people like all the vegan band members of Silverstein, and Allison Watson (wife of Paul Watson and animal rights activist)? are spotted) has opened another branch !! The former Vegan Hearts Peace Cafe has now become the Vegan Healing Cafe. This new branch has an extensive section of classic animal rights books in japanese translation. (not for sale, for reading in the cafe). The new branch is close by Ogikubo station on the JR chuo line and Marunouchi line.

This month it's 5 years ago that Its Vegetable opened its doors. It’s Vegetable offers vegetarian Taiwan cooking. Most dishes are vegan, and the menu has good indication if a dish is vegan or vegetarian. It’s Vegetable has two stars in the Vegan Restaurant Pocketguide.

3 Days in Laos

Most of the foreigners visiting Vientiane (the capital of Laos) do so for just one purpose ; to get a visa at the Thai embassy so they can stay a long time in Thailand.
Okay, Vientiane isnt that bad at all, it's a rather nice laid back small city without airpollution and noise from cars. And also without Vegetarian Restaurants. >_< 
I had my meals in an Indian Restaurant , that had a special Vegetarian section on the menu. The meat of the other dishes was "halal", this means the animals are slaughterd in a special way accoring to the rules of Islam. If meat is not "halal" a muslim cannot eat it.
Another nearby Chinese Restaurant also had a special Vegetarian Menu.
Anyway, if you think about opening a vegan restaurant, try Vientiane, there is no competition and you will be the first vegan restaurant in Laos!

Top Two what i most enjoyed in Vientiane :

1. There are many very old giant trees, around their trunk you can see lizards.

2. A beautiful mural painting, the photo shows one part, the whole Mural Painting consist of three parts. It's about being respectful for nature, and don't kill animals in the forests.

Recently Two Star  vegan restaurant Hanada Rosso (Page 45) moved their shop from Meguro-ku to Aoyama. The shop in Meguro-ku was a little bit off-track, the new location is so much more convenient. Recommended !

Upcoming Events

Coming weekend there are various interesting vegan events.

Saterday and sunday in Gifu prefecture is Japan's oldests vegan festival; the Earth Day market. Since more then 10 years this festival is organised by the veggie people of Warabemura.
By the way, although the same name, this vegan festival has no connections with the yearly non-veggie Earth Day Market in Yoyogi Park. (i visited that festival last month and was rather disappointed to see so much meat like pork meat being sold. Not only is meat a form of unnecesary animal cruelty, the production of meat also produces huge amounts of CO2 ; "global warming gasses", so "meat" hardly fits on an environmental festival..)

In Tokyo this upcoming weekend (sunday) has the monthly Earth Day Market in Yoyogi park. I have to confess i haven't had a change to visit this festival yet but my vegans friends like it very much, and also Loving Hut has a booth with vegan food. :-)

If you are a foreigner veggie and living in Tokyo, you probably have heard about the Tokyo Raw Food Meetup Group and the Tokyo Vegan Meetup Group. This sunday there is a joint vegan Potlluck Party in Yoyogi Park. Many members of the Tokyo Vegan Meetup GroupMeetup are guys so if you would like to meet some veggie males, ladies, here's your change...:-)

The Pocketguide is selling very well, in just two months time half of the stock is sold.

Vegan Peace Hearts Cafe Re-opens !

Recently closed Vegan Peace Hearts Cafe will re-open next month. Mr Orihara from the populair Vegan Healing Cafe in Shibuya will be the new owner. And the new name for this vegan cafe in Ogikubo will be Vegan Healing Cafe. We hope in the future more branches of the Vegan Healing Cafe will open !

Maman Terrace Osaka closed !

The last of the Maman Terrace shops closed this month !!

Just in one year all there shops closeds ; the Little Maman in Kyoto, Shinagawa (Tokyo), Nishi Shinjuku) and the maman Terrace in Aoyama (Tokyo)

It seems the closing is not permanent but that the shop will move to another location.
Maman Terrace Osaka had the greatest selection of Vegan Cakes in Osaka.

Eat More Greens

The last time i visited the Eat More Greens (Page 42 in the Pocketguide) in the nice neighborhood Azabu-Juuban (Tokyo) was maybe a year ago. Yeah, long time, but there are so many veggie restaurants, i impossible can regularly visit them all.

Anyway, i was pleasantly surprised because the menu seemed to be much longer than before (if i remember correctly), and most dishes, including cake, are now vegan.

If a dish on the menu is Vegan, there is a "V" sign. Very convenient !
